Voices of the Boyne

Voices of the Boyne

If you happen to be in Drogheda on a Wednesday evening and you are in the neighborhood of the Pheasant Pub, listen and you just might hear the Voices of the Boyne. A hundred women from all walks of life leave behind the worries of the world, the stress of jobs, families and kids to take a much needed time out and sing their hearts out. And you know what? It does all those hearts good. The getting together, the sharing of life, the break from routine, and the blending of the their creativity. It puts harmony into their week.

For a few hours mid-week they escape to that place singers love.

“Once you start singing, you can’t think of anything else. You just get caught up in the harmonies and the music, says Claire Grogan, Musical Director of the choir. “We all enjoy it so much we usually stay late and are wrecked on the Thursday, but it is always worth it.”

Jan Lyons saw the group at a local Christmas concert and showed up for a rehearsal and found so much more than a choir. “It’s just brilliant. We are all so different yet we all love to sing. And there’s so much camaraderie, because we all love it so. And it’s such a wonderful break in the week.”

Founder Louise Mahony says she really wanted to sing in a community choir and couldn’t find what she was looking for. “So I put the call out on Facebook and it was amazing how many other women out there were looking for the same thing.”

They’ve used their talents to make a community-wide music video, celebrating Drogheda. And to raise money for charities.

You can hear their stories, their rich harmonies, and why they love the music they sing and the friends they have made in “Voices of the Boyne” on Erin’s Isle.

And you can see them in action, at their latest concert as well.
