Irish Music is Strong...in Reno

Irish Music is Strong...in Reno

There is something about Irish music that seems to appeal to anyone with Irish roots, and pretty much everyone else too. That explains the popularity of Ceol Irish Pub in Reno, Nevada. There, musicians gather on Tuesday nights to play a session, sing a tune and polish up on the music of their ancestors.

Terry Fegan, a current resident of Kinsale, Ireland, near Cork, was in Reno a few weeks ago and stopped in to share a tune.  She sang a song warning young maids not to marry old men. It is one you need to hear to believe (which you can, by listening to Ep 36 of Erin’s Isle) and she got a rousing round of applause from the crowd. And that happens all the time at Ceol.

Reno also hosted a concert featuring a Reno band called 3-17 that involves those of Irish descent, those who visit Ireland often, and a few who just love the genre. They are fantastic and can be heard around town, year round. (Again, hear them yourself on Ep 36 of Erin’s Isle)

And they were opening for The Young Dubliners who were making a tour stop in the Biggest Little City in the World. (also on Erin’s Isle, episode 36)

The Young Dubliners always make Reno a stop on their American tours.

Now, I know that a lot of other cities have denser Irish populations than Reno, Nevada. And I am hoping you take the time to hear what’s happening in Reno and then write to me to share what happens in your city. Because no matter where you are living, if you have any Irish blood, I know it is celebrated every chance you get. And I am always looking for stories for Erin’s Isle.
